The Spring Hill College Italy Center is located in Bologna, Italy.

What sets this program apart is its focus on social justice, deep cultural immersion, and meaningful engagement with the local community. In addition to rigorous academics, students have opportunities for internships and service within the Bolognese community, as well as travel experiences that take them beyond the typical tourist path and into places they might not otherwise encounter on their own.

No. The Italy Center is operated by Spring Hill College as an extension of its campus in Mobile, Alabama. Italy Center staff are employees of Spring Hill College, and students in the program come from U.S. institutions. Students live and study in Bologna, but they are not enrolled as University of Bologna students.

Yes. Bologna’s strong university culture makes it easy for students to connect with local Italian students through everyday life in the city, from campus spaces to community events. The Social Hub, the housing facility, is also a great place to meet both Italian and other international students. In addition, the Italy Center offers programming designed to foster these connections, and students participating in internships or service opportunities may build relationships with Italian peers and colleagues through their placements.

Social justice is woven throughout the Italy Center experience. Through coursework, community engagement, service-learning, internships, and program activities, students are encouraged to think critically about local and global issues such as migration, identity, inequality, human rights, and community responsibility. This focus helps students engage with Bologna not just as visitors, but as thoughtful participants in a broader community.

No. The Italy Center is open to students from a wide range of majors. Course offerings vary by term, so students should work with their academic advisor or study abroad office to determine how Italy Center courses can fit into their degree plan.

No prior Italian language experience is required to participate in the program. However, students should be open to learning and using Italian while abroad. Even basic language skills can make everyday life in Bologna more meaningful and help students engage more fully with the local community.

The Italy Center welcomes Spring Hill College students, students from our partner institutions, and visiting students from other U.S. colleges and universities. Students come from a variety of academic backgrounds and majors, creating a diverse learning community each semester.
