Internships and Service Learning
A cornerstone of the Italy Center experience is the opportunity to participate in an internship or service-learning placement while in Bologna. Our internships are designed with flexibility, allowing students to gain a professionally-driven experience tailored to their interests and career goals, but also deeply careful to the specific needs of the organisations hosting them.
For students drawn to community engagement, our Service Learning course pairs hands-on service with a guided class component that helps students connect their work in Bologna to broader social issues around the world.
Internships
Internships provide immersive, hands-on learning experiences in partnership with our community organizations. Grounded in a structured academic framework, students spend the majority of their time collaborating directly with on-site supervisors and local teams. Through meaningful, real-world work, they build practical skills, professional confidence, and a deeper understanding of their field.
To participate in an internship during any of our terms, students will enrol in our 3-credit internship course IDS490. Through this course, students receive the structure and reflection necessary to support deep engagement with the site work and the themes they encounter.
Service Learning
Our service learning course blends classroom lectures with meaningful, hands-on service in the Bolognese community. Grounded in human rights and global issues, the experience brings the material to life in a real and authentic way. You won’t just study social justice, you’ll put it into practice through direct engagement with the social justice sector.
Students participating in service learning will be enrolled in SSC295, which will provided a structured learning environment in which students can reflect and analyse their experiences at the service learning sites in real time with peers and faculty.
What makes our experiential learning unique?
1
Immersion
The Italy Center takes hands-on learning to the next level through immersion in the Bolognese community. Students don’t just observe, they immerse themselves in the community, learning alongside local partners, serving in meaningful ways, and experiencing Bologna authentically and sustainably. We do the groundwork to ensure each opportunity is relevant, practical, and valuable for students and our community.
2
Authenticity
Our experiential learning is unique because it’s built on authenticity, not “voluntourism.” At the Italy Center, students are immersed in the Bolognese community, working alongside local partners in meaningful environments that respond to real needs. Through long-term relationships and intentional programming, students don’t just visit Bologna, they become part of it in ways that are sustainable, respectful, and deeply transformative.
3
Support
At the Italy Center, students are supported at every step of their hands-on learning from placement to reflection. We handle the logistics, prepare students to enter community spaces respectfully, and stay closely involved throughout the experience to ensure it’s supported, meaningful, and set up for a positively impactful experience for both students and organizations. With consistent guidance and mentorship, students gain the confidence to learn on the ground while still having a strong support system behind them.
