BUS/CMM 376: Intercultural Communication
Course description
This course examines the close relationship between culture and communication, emphasizing how our own cultural norms often go unnoticed yet shape how we interact with others. In a globalized and diverse world, students will explore key theories of intercultural communication and how meaning is created across cultural contexts. The course analyzes common forms of miscommunication and provides practical strategies to overcome cultural barriers. It also addresses contemporary issues such as migration, multiculturalism, and global media. Ultimately, the course aims to build cultural awareness and equip students with skills for effective communication in an interconnected world.
Learning objectives
The course is designed to help you gather knowledge of the communication within an intercultural context. By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Learning to share one’s own culture while developing an appreciation for the culture of others
Gaining awareness of one’s own cultural assumptions
Sensitization to ethnocentric attitudes, diversity and inclusivity
Increased acceptance of cultural differences
Ability to distinguish cultural differences from structures of social power
Learning that cultural differences are not hierarchical and cultures cannot be ranked
Learning to identify the norms and values of one’s own culture and their influence on one’s identity
Increased ability to relate to people who have a different worldview and a different communication style from self
Becoming aware of the role of today’s global media for national and ethnic cultures and co-cultures
Developing intercultural proficiency and global citizenship
